Admin Themes for WordPress
The WordPress Admin Design is still okaybut still not really up to date. With the last updates there have been some subtle changes in some places, for example the buttons, but on the whole it could be designed much nicer. This is shown by the different admin themes for WordPress, which implement new designs via plugin and redesign the complete backend. I have taken a closer look at 10 of them for you. Some of them are really nice, others are really innovative, some of them simply copy existing design languages, like Material Design, to make the WordPress Admin look better. But let's have a closer look at my favorites. I have selected 5 free and 5 paid Admin Themes.
Free Admin Themes
As always, not everything in life is free. Especially the very extensive and extreme work in the area of Admin Themes, are therefore only available as a premium plugin. But it doesn't matter, because fortunately there are also very good free variants, which I would like to introduce to you here.
With Slate a really very fine and sophisticated admin theme for WordPress was published. Wonderful that there are also such extensive works for free. Slate is minimal, simple and very nice structured. With the colors I personally would have set other accents, but they can be manipulated in the plugin files. All in all really well thought out and especially writing articles I really like in the new view. But it is also different and at first unfamiliar.
As the name already suggests, it is oriented Material on the material design of Google. Basically an extended flat design, which uses brighter colors, contrasts, transparency and different layers. Not so my taste, but among the free ones still one of the top admin themes.
The Fancy Admin Theme is interesting because it is very bright. A lot of white, a little gray and light blue create a pleasant and quite new color atmosphere in the backend of WordPress. Especially the overview of this theme is really more than good.
Basically. WP Flat not bad at all, but some details don't quite fit yet, in my opinion. The whole thing is based on the Flat UI Kit by Design Modo and is Open Source, so you can also just do it yourself and improve or extend and adapt the whole thing.
An old classic among the Admin Themes Blue on. After MP6 was released, the Blue Admin Theme was released relatively quickly and it is continuously updated and renewed. Clear structures, much blue and subtle changes make Blue a successful alternative. Of course only if you like the color blue.
Premium Admin Themes
The Premium Admin Themes for WordPress are indeed often more than just small adjustments. They are about extremely minimalistic concepts, complete reinventions, or even real redesigns. But not for free, but on average for about 15 dollars.
With First you'll get your first real hit right here. That's because First turns the entire sidebar into symbols and rearranges almost everything. Very clever and simply really nice flat design, in the matching colors, I think.
Micropanel is again something for minimalists like me. It's absolutely simple, with simple frames and an incredible amount of white. It offers very little distraction and simple, but also extremely clear structures. I really like it because it is so deliberately puristic.
With Retina Press another classic has made it to the list. At that time the Admin Theme looked quite different, but then it got a major update. Now, in my opinion, the fascination and the special is missing. It is still chic, but also very unspectacular.
The Admin Theme Ultra is truly the sandbox among all admin themes. Besides several ready-made templates, almost everything can be individually adjusted and perfected in WordPress Admin. Whether color, font, button or more, every element has its own option in Ultra. More is probably not really possible.
As we all know, the best comes last. Clientside is exactly the right thing for all purists and could almost come from myself. Absolutely minimal it comes along and still perfectly designed. For me personally, this is the absolute highlight and the most beautiful admin theme so far, because it is as reduced as possible. Absolutely breathtaking, because everything was solved very elegantly. There are also some tweaks and support for many well-known plug-ins, so that they fit in perfectly.
Prettier than the original
This brings us back to the end. That's what they were, the 10 WordPress Admin Themes, all of them, at least some of them, are definitely prettier than the original. I typically like the minimalist Admin Themes especially well, but I really like the client-side. A backend is rarely so puristic and minimal, so distraction-free and clear. What is your favorite? Tell me in the comments.
