You can blog about anything and everything. But before you can start, you first need a decent blogging software or CMS (content management system), which allows you to fully concentrate on blogging. WordPress offers best conditions, is quickly installed and turns simple blogs into fantastic websites thanks to countless free and premium themes.
Create a free blog with WordPress: here's how it works
Although there are numerous WordPress alternatives for bloggers and other website owners with construction kits like Wix.com, Jimdo and Co, WordPress is completely free for now. In addition, the world's most popular CMS offers far more customization options. Even if you don't use them at the beginning of your blogging career, they might help you again later on.
Step 1: Sign in to WordPress.com
Before you start, you have to decide whether you want to host the blog directly with WordPress (WordPress.com) or download the CMS and install it at another provider (WordPress.org). WordPress is only completely free if you create the page directly at WordPress.com and use a subdomain like "yourblog.wordpress.com".
As soon as you want a completely own domain or need more features, you have to choose a paid tariff at WordPress.com.
After you have entered all your data in the registration process, you have to confirm your free WordPress blog. Just click on send and check your email inbox. WordPress will send you an email with an activation link that you just have to click on.
Step 2: Set up a free WordPress blog
After you have activated your free WordPress blog, you will be immediately forwarded to the setup wizard. Here you can choose a blog title, a tagline (subtitle) and your preferred language. On the next page of the setup wizard you can choose a WordPress theme. Here you can choose between free and paid options.
If you have decided on a (free) theme, you can individualize it. For example, set a banner image or change the colors of your free WordPress blog. You can also link any social media accounts to your blog.
Step 3: Publish first post
On the last page of the setup wizard you can publish your first blog post. You can change all the settings you made in the setup wizard later. Simply navigate to the personalize section on the left sidebar → Customize; there you will be taken to the customizer.
The same sidebar also takes you to the menu items where you can install plug-ins and manage your blog posts and pages.
