Hi Daniel, would you introduce yourself to the readers of fastWP?
Daniel: Hi Christian, I am currently Chief Global Strategist at Kinsta. I joined the company in 2016 with the aim of supporting Kinsta's initial expansion plans in the Spanish speaking markets. About a year later, I was asked to take on the coordination of a much larger expansion project around the world, covering over 10 new markets. Since then, we have launched our website in 10 new languages, provide support in 6 languages (including mother tongue support) and are working in many countries to build our local teams. I won't be telling you a secret when I say that Kinsta has serious plans in Germany too.
In 2.3 short sentences - how would you briefly introduce Kinsta to someone?
Daniel: Kinsta offers Managed WordPress Hosting (hosted on the Google Cloud platform), with an emphasis on speed, security and high quality support. We host all types of websites, from small blogs to extremely busy major portals. We have worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including GE, Intuit, Drift, Freshbooks and Buffer.
An achievement to which our entire team really proud is the fact that we have Kinsta from a 0$ company to a 7-digit enterprise value. This is just mi much hard work and unique challenges, but it was a great success. has also given us the flexibility to build the platform that we have from day one. Most of the features we've introduced today come directly from user feedback.
We are also proud that we were the first managed WordPress hoster on the market to exclusively use the Google Cloud Platform (GCP). In the meantime, many of our competitors have followed this example. This confirms that we are on the right track. It also means that our support and system administration teams have extensive knowledge of GCP infrastructure.
You are looking for a WordPress service provider?
How did the idea of founding Kinsta come about?
Daniel: "The Idea of Kinsta" started in a small apartment in Budapest, Hungary in 2013 when Mark Gavalda and three other people made the first detailed plans for its implementation. Previously, the founders were contractually involved in the development and design of websites for customers. They realized at that time that they could not recommend or find a high quality WordPress hosting that they could recommend with a clear conscience. Building a fantastic website is pointless if it doesn't load quickly and provide a good user experience.
For this reason, and because of the attractiveness of entering a SaaS business model, they decided to found Kinsta. From the outset, their focus was on rapid support from current WordPress developers coupled with lightning-fast speeds. Today Kinsta is a US company with a team of more than 100 employees and one of the fastest growing Managed WordPress Hosters in the industry!
Does a WordPress hosting need other basic requirements or configurations than e.g. a standard hosting?
Daniel: This really depends on the needs of the customer and the type of hosting. In the case of Kinsta we offer Managed WordPress Hosting and this has some basic requirements such as website speed, server configuration, maintenance and monitoring. We believe these are the essential means of maximising the needs of our customers.
In general, the goal is to ensure a good customer experience, and to achieve that, you need to provide speed, security and support. We believe that these are critical to any WP hosting platform.
The topic of security is of great importance for WordPress. Is a WordPress page on your server more secure than with a "standard provider?
Daniel: Security is one of the key points of Kinsta. We use several security measures to maximise the protection of the website. Firstly, we only host WordPress pages that run on supported versions of PHP. This is because outdated versions no longer contain security updates and are exposed to unpatched security holes. Currently we only support PHP 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3, but as soon as PHP 7.4 is released we will make it available to our customers (by mid-December PHP 7.2 will be the lowest).
WordPress minor security patches are also applied automatically as soon as they are available.
To prevent further DDoS attacks, Kinsta Linux Container (LXC) and LXD to ensure the complete isolation of each individual WordPress site. This is a much more secure method than what other competitors offer, as Google's infrastructure is very is extensive.
In addition, the Google platform also maintains relationships with some of the largest ISPs in the world, which helps to improve the security of our customers' data. They also use encryption to store customer data.
One question in between - what are your 5 favorite WordPress plugins?
Daniel: There are a few, but I think that the following 5 are my favorites:
- Yoast SEO
- WP Rocket
- WP Feedback
On the following list we present 71 important and helpful plugins: 71 of our most useful WordPress

What are your plans for the next three years?
Daniel: A big advantage of not having investors is that we put the users first. We have built our entire platform, including our MyKinsta and affiliate dashboards, from the ground up based on feedback from our customers. Every suggestion (both negative and positive) is recorded and discussed in our internal team.
This strategy has worked very well for us. In We want to improve this even further in the future. It means continuing with our customers and through detailed quarterly surveys, to communicate to figure out what we could do better. And, of course, all this to do what makes the lives of our customers easier.
Our founders have always valued high quality support from WordPress developers to achieve our lightning fast loading times. As technology is constantly changing, we want to be ready to adapt and act quickly when needed.
One last question - where do you see the CMS WordPress in the future?
Daniel: What WordPress has made available to its users with Gutenberg, and above all will provide, is a significantly improved user experience.
Since WordPress is getting more and more popular from year to year non-programmers want to develop their own websites, the User interface much better, more user-friendly and easier.
The WordPress community is also growing rapidly and we are excited about what the future will bring! We always try to exchange as much as possible with the constantly growing community. During 2019 Kinsta will have participated in more than 25 WordCamps and a variety of local WordPress Meetups around the world. Our team participates in these events at every opportunity and as we continue to grow, it's something we want to be even more involved in.
